In a joint statement released this Wednesday, December 20, five of the nineteen presidential candidates in the DRC demand the reorganization of the general elections. They declare their opposition to any extension of the voting period.

The statement is signed by these personalities:

  • Floribert Anzuluni
  • Nkema Lilo
  • Théodore Ngoyi
  • Denis Mukwege
  • Martin Fayulu.

According to this document, the general elections scheduled for December 20, 2023, should not be continued until Thursday, December 21, 2023. The signatories argue that the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) is constitutionally and legally incapable of making such a decision.

That is why Floribert Anzuluni, Nkema Lilo, Théodore Ngoyi, Denis Mukwege, and Martin Fayulu call upon the Congolese people, the Government, SADC, the African Union, and the international community to demand the reorganization of new elections under conditions that ensure equality among competitors.

In a statement, the CENI indeed acknowledged the delays encountered in the commencement of voting operations in certain polling stations across the country: "The polling stations that opened late will operate for 11 hours, as provided by law, to allow every voter to cast their vote".
