Doctor in Environmental Chemistry, specialist in eco-toxicology, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Director General of the Research Center for Water and Environment, Patience Ngelinkoto was the guest on the "Infos vertes" magazine broadcast on the television channel "Digital Congo TV".

According to her, peatlands are one of the solutions for the climate but also a potential time bomb.

As a solution, Ms. Ngelinkoto believes that peatlands, which are ecosystems found in wetlands, have the unique ability to sequester a large amount of CO2, helping to combat global warming. They sequester at least one-third of the world's carbon. The peats that make up a peatland are composed of dead plants, fallen leaves, and tree branches mixed in water-saturated environments with a high capacity for CO2 retention.

On the other hand, this researcher believes that exploiting peatlands without considering viability conditions and conducting anthropogenic activities will damage their sequestration capacity, and all the carbon they contain will be released into the environment. Hence, a time bomb.

Furthermore, Patience Ngelinkoto calls for the preservation and safeguarding of these environments.

The DRC is called a solution country for climate warming problems since it alone has several peatlands that store a large amount of carbon.
