This low service level does not meet the expectations and needs of the population in a province where humanitarian needs are still growing, this environmental organization stated. This situation forces many residents to resort to boreholes, and the challenges remain enormous to increase the distribution of this precious commodity.

Today, in many neighborhoods of the city of Bunia, there are more than 3000 boreholes that are served today and are listed in the downtown area, informed the office head in charge of administration at the provincial division of energy, Deogratias Mutuma.

He added: "The water from boreholes presents a health risk. Moreover, in the event of earthquakes, these wells can collapse and become a danger to the communities."

Thus, the coordinator of the NGO Consortium for Environmental Preservation, Dieudonné Lossa believes that "the Government must increase the capacity of the water distribution utilities, this in order to allow the population to have access to water, which is a right of every citizen."

The World Water Day was celebrated this year under the theme: "Water for Peace."
