The derailment of a freight train from the Uélé Railways Society (CFU) on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, resulted in the deaths of four people and several injured on the Ubundu-Kisangani route in the Tshopo province.

Departing from Ubundu to the city of Kisangani, this train, carrying a variety of goods as well as numerous passengers, derailed due to the highly advanced deterioration of the railway track.

The authorities of Ubundu have sounded an alarm to solicit government involvement in the opening up of the Kisangani-Ubundu route, a distance of 125 km, in order to allow the population to move freely with their goods via the train.

Furthermore, they have prohibited the population from traveling by freight train for their safety, before specifying that the derailment of this train occurred about 36 kilometers from the city of Kisangani.
