Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has called for an extraordinary summit of the Troika and troop-contributing countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Lusaka, Zambia, this Saturday, March 23, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.
According to the website of this sub-regional organization, "The summit will discuss the security situation in the SADC region, specifically in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and in Cabo Delgado, in the northern part of Mozambique."
The SADC Military Mission in the DRC, expanded to include Burundi, consists of South African, Tanzanian, and Malawian troops.
These troops have replaced the Kenyan, South Sudanese, and Ugandan contingents of the EAC Regional Force. Their withdrawal took place at the end of the year 2023 upon request by the Congolese government for ineffectiveness.
