Following the lead of the European Union, the embassies of Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland in Kinshasa issued a joint statement on Wednesday, 20 March 2024, expressing their opposition to the Congolese government lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in the DRC.

In principle, they note, we are opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances. We believe that the application of the death penalty undermines human dignity, there is no conclusive evidence of its deterrent value, and any judicial error leading to its application is irreversible and irreparable.

More than two-thirds of the countries in the world have abolished the death penalty in law or in practice, they continue before announcing: "We are working with our international partners to support this global decline in the application of the death penalty. We hope that the DRC will choose to join this effort.
