Intersex individuals are those whose biological and anatomical characteristics are not specific to a male or female person in the DRC.

The coordinator of the NGO "Inter-Desires Group (Gide)," Dr. Ginette Ntumbi, satisfied with the rich exchanges shared with experts on this little-known subject within the community, called on the media to contribute to better awareness and understanding of intersexuality.

"The media play a major role, a great power in societal life for conveying good information," said Dr. Ntumbi.

Among the interventions at this roundtable, Dr. Ginette Ntumbi talked about: "myths or realities of VSC," Professor Alex Mutombo presented on "the VSC and medical approaches," while "the VSC and ethical questions" were addressed by Professor Félicien Munday and finally Mr. Richard Tshibanda spoke on "VSC and human rights."

Another recommendation made was the development of a suitable legal framework to promote and protect intersex individuals.

Regarding this point, an interministerial committee should be established, composed of experts whose main mission will be to draft a bill that a national deputy will endorse to present to the National Assembly.

It is worth noting that this roundtable was organized with the financial and technical support of partners (Cuso International, CNDH, Marie Stopes International).

It was part of the process of disseminating Resolution 552 of March 21, 2023, adopted by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The overall objective was to mobilize stakeholders for better consideration of VSC and respect for the rights of intersex individuals.
