The National Alliance of Traditional Authorities of the DRC (ANATC) requested on Monday, December 18, its involvement in the co-optation of customary chiefs into the provincial and national assemblies.

The president of this entity, Wilbert Kyungu Kisebue, made this known in a statement given to the media in Kinshasa.

"The co-optation of customary chiefs should this time be done by custom, the mother of the nation. We support the president of the CENI for the 2023 elections. Afterwards, we will gather in a national conclave, the customary chiefs ourselves in the 145 territories, and we will select those who will be co-opted into the assemblies at the national and provincial level," he emphasized.

Wilbert Kyung Kyungu also noted that customary chiefs who are co-opted by political parties immediately become political whereas they should remain apolitical.

He is pleased with the progress of the ongoing electoral process in the DRC and advocates for free, transparent, and peaceful elections.

ANATC has also invited the actors involved in this electoral process to prioritize the higher interest of the nation.
