The provincial government of Tanganyika indicated on Tuesday, April 30, that more than 28,000 displaced households have been recorded following the flooding caused by the rising waters of Lake Tanganyika.

These displaced individuals are living in difficult conditions, some spending the night under the stars, while others are in the homes of host families and in churches.

"To address this situation, negotiations with humanitarian agencies are underway in Kalemie to mobilize funds to relocate and assist flood victims," affirmed Bob Morisho, provincial minister of Humanitarian Affairs. He added that sites to accommodate them in Kalemie have already been identified, before mentioning his regret that most of the affected people are not ready to join the displaced persons sites.

He furthermore emphasized that only those who agree to move to these sites will receive assistance. Those who have abandoned their homes due to the encroachment of the waters of Lake Tanganyika are left to fend for themselves.

He also mentioned that about a hundred classrooms and health centers are either flooded or collapsed in Kalemie and the six territories of Tanganyika.
