At least 35 deaths due to the cholera epidemic and more than 155 suspected cases reported in two health zones (ZS) Mushenge and Dekese, located in the Kasaï province. An epidemic declared by the governor of this province, John Kabeya Shikayi.

Faced with this situation, the WHO provided sanitary supplies for cholera management to the health authorities of Mushenge.

This was possible thanks to the financial support of the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCRF) which aims to eradicate the epidemic in the health zones of Mushenge and Dekese.

Since the beginning of this year, the cumulative number of reported cholera cases up to Week 14/2024 amounts to 12,578 cases and 201 deaths (case fatality rate: 1.6%) spread across 81 ZS in 13 out of 26 provinces in the country.

Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that in 2022, nearly 472,697 cases and 2,349 deaths were reported in 44 countries. The difference between these figures and the estimated morbidity burden is due to the many cases that went unrecorded because of limitations in surveillance systems and fears of negative repercussions on trade and tourism.
