The United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia, warned during his briefing to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, April 24, about the consequences of the ongoing conflict between the DRC and Rwanda.

"The persistence of the confrontation between these two neighboring countries, against a backdrop of mutual accusations of destabilization plans and the surge of hate speech, increases the risk of regional conflagration," he believes.

For Huang Xia, the tensions between the DRC and its neighbor, Rwanda, not only persist but have also been exacerbated by repeated clashes between the M23 and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).

He highlighted the gravity of the situation, marked notably by the intensification of the conflict and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the East of the DRC.

He further indicated that tensions between Burundi and Rwanda, closely linked to the situation in the East of the DRC, further aggravate an already concerning situation and compromise the significant progress made since 2020 in the relations between these two countries.
