The National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) organized, this Monday, April 29, 2024, the elections for senators and provincial governors. At the end of the governor's ballot, Jean Bakomito garnered 11 votes out of 20 voters, thus overtaking his three challengers, the incumbent governor Christophe Baseane Nangaa (0), the tribal chief Constant Lungangbe Mbatanadu (9), and the young Serge Madigo (0).
Jean Bakomito thus becomes the 3rd elected governor of this young province resulting from the reorganization of the Orientale Province. Corneille Nangaa's younger brother had already lost his seat at the National Assembly as a national deputy, also to Jean Bakomito, after the final results were given by the Constitutional Court. This is the second election lost by Christophe Baseane Nangaa whose brother, Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo, is in rebellion with the M23, supported by Rwanda, in part of the North Kivu province.
