According to the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIRDC), these attacks by the M23 rebels have struck innocent and defenseless civilians, including women and children, causing massive displacements of people and thus blocking supply routes to the city of Goma, worsening the humanitarian situation, states the press release.
"Deliberately targeting innocent civilians constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and laws and principles related to human rights," the document reads.
Furthermore, it is important to note that the provisional toll published by the provincial authorities indicates that bombs supposedly dropped by the M23 killed at least 15 civilians and injured 35 others on Friday, May 3. The projectiles exploded on the site of Lushagala, located in a displacement camp in the Mugunga neighborhood, in the west of the city of Goma.
