This is part of its disengagement in accordance with Resolution 2717 taken by the UN Security Council in December 2023.

In relation to this resolution, Monusco announces that as of May 1, 2024, it will terminate its mandate in South Kivu.

According to this document, "only the necessary uniformed personnel to ensure the security of the personnel, facilities, convoys, and UN equipment will be maintained until the end of the withdrawal activities.”

It should be recalled that, as part of its disengagement, Monusco had already handed over two military bases to the national authorities. Of the remaining seven military bases, five (Mikenge, Minembwe, Rutemba, Uvira, and Kavumu) will be transferred to the FARDC between May and June while two military bases (Baraka and Sange) will be closed in May.
