South-African president Cyril Ramaphosa qualified the World Health Organization (WHO) and his head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of "exceptional" after they were criticized by American president Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump tweeted on Tuesday that WHO "was very centered on China" whereas it is "largely" financed by the United States. He informed that he could cease financing the World Health Organization.

Mr. Ramaphosa tweeted that the leadership of Dr. Tedros, who is native of Ethiopia, during the pandemia of Covid-19 was more than remarkable.  "The most powerful weapon against COVID19 and its medical, social impact and economic devastator is the international co-operation and solidarity". "This is why the exceptional leadership whose WHO and Dr. Tedros make proof during a world-wide crisis of public health is without precedent more than remarkable".

Previously, the president of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahama, had defended the head of WHO. "Surprised to learn the existence from American government campaign against the world leadership of WHO".

"The African Union fully supports WHO and Dr. Tedros. The accent must remain put on the collective fight against Covid-19 as united world community. The time of the responsibilization will come ", Moussa Faki Mahamat mentioned.

The position of the AU is also supported by the Namibian president Hage Geingob and Rwandan president Paul Kagamé who shared a message of support on his Twitter account.

"Dr. Tedros as a head of WHO, has the full confidence and the support of Africa… such as we know it!"
