During this meeting with the media accredited to Monusco, Florence Marchal hinted that the representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC is currently staying in New York, for the discussions on the renewal of the Monusco mandate which will expire on March 31st. This initiative was taken in perspective of the session of the Security Council which will be devoted to the DRC as early as Monday, March 18th.

The session of the UN Security Council, besides the question of the renewal of the Monusco mandate, the spokesperson of Leila Zerrougoui, will at the same time put the question on the security situation of the territory of Yumbi, in the province of Maï- Ndombe which since the end of 2018 has killed more than 500 people, according to an investigation by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office.

According to the spokesperson of Monusco, this subject will also be the subject of heated debate. In addition, she also revealed that the UN representative in the Congo will continue her journey to Geneva, to take part in the interactive dialogue on the Democratic Republic of Congo, organized in the framework of the 40th session of the Council of human rights. For Florence Marchal, the United Nations Office for Human Rights denounces the involvement of traditional leaders in the frightful affair of Yumbi. According to her, Monusco has already begun judicial investigations against perpetrators of these crimes, and they must be prosecuted and punished, the spokesman of Monusco said.

Seizing the opportunity, Florence Marchal stressed the fact that Monusco, through its representative in the DRC, wishes to draw attention to the encouraging signs observed in some provinces of the country where elements of armed groups have expressed their intention to support the new President of the Republic in his fight for peace throughout the entire national territory of Congo.
