At least twelve people have died by drowning and roughly a hundred dwellings of displaced persons were destroyed last week, during a storm that struck Lake Albert, near the town of Bunia, announced the civil society of that town on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Several material damages were reported, especially the dwellings of the fishermen built on the islets of Matete, Rukwanzi, and Mulango, as well as numerous boats and fishing equipment and goods were submerged.

Members of the fishermen's committee stated that this situation has caused a disaster for about a hundred families whose members are homeless and are seeking government and humanitarian support for the reconstruction of new homes and the rehabilitation of some huts.

Following this situation, it has been requested that residents and other travelers on Lake Albert wear life jackets to prevent further damage.
